What is Coaching?

“Unlocking a person’s potential to maximise their performance. Coaching is helping people learn, rather than teaching them” (Whitmore 2003)

What does Coaching involve?

Coaching focuses on performance and the achievement of a specific goal or development of a specific skill.

The coaching process is designed enable the person to dig deep, discover, explore and clarify answers that may already reside within but where the person may not either be consciously unaware of the answers, or is perhaps afraid of taking the next step.

The coaching process usually takes over a set time frame, on a one-to-one basis.

The coaching process can involve:

  • Focussing on a specific goal or purpose
  • Taking stock of the present situation
  • Talking through the options
  • Imagining a specific outcome
  • Aligning your actions with the goal you envision
  • Planning towards the attainment of the specific goal
  • Taking actions to achieve the goal
  • Working through any blocks
  • Reviewing your progress

What makes a good coaching relationship?

  • Enthusiasm and openness to new ideas
  • A willingness to challenge your way of thinking
  • A genuine desire to make positive changes, or to grow and reach a specific goal
  • A good rapport between the Coach and the Coachee
  • Commitment to the coaching process and the improvement of your business
